Scalp Reduction
For those of you with a the money and the resolution, there are several different cosmetic surgeries available that are more or less a permanent solution to your hair loss. While hair plugs, which hairs from other parts of the head are transplanted in the bald zone, are the most popular form of surgery, another cosmetic procedure that has gained popularity recently is scalp reduction surgery.
How it is done

Scalp reduction ( or alopecia reduction) surgery involves removing the balding part of the scalp and then stretching a hair bearing part of the scalp over to cover up what has been removed and suturing it into place. In order to be effective, this procedure needs to be done by a very skilled surgeon and the ideal scalp reduction candidate needs to meet certain requirements before this procedure can be safely done. This procedure is sometimes done alone, or in combination with hair transplant surgery depending upon the desired aesthetic effect that the patient and doctor agree upon. Scalp reduction is also sometimes done along with brow lift surgery in order to remove brow lines or crows feet. The procedure takes around four hours to do and you will probably have to take pain killers and antibiotics for a few days afterward in order to deal with the discomfort.
Ideal patients
Since scalp reduction is a procedure that involves moving a big chunk of scalp at one time, men who suffer from the typical horseshoe shaped balding spot are the most ideal candidates for the procedure. Since women tend to lose their hair in patches, alopecia reduction surgery is not usually recommended for them. Since skin from one part of your head is going to be stretched over another scalp elasticity is also another important factor in this procedure. having a good supply of donor hair is also important.
Complications
Since this is a medical procedure involving cutting and suturing, complications can occur. Scarring at the suture lines and “stretch back” of the scalp have been known to occur. there is also a chance of infection and there is not a guarantee that the hair on the stretched piece of scalp will survive. Also, you may need to go back for further treatment as your androgen alopecia continues and other balding spots appear on your head.
How it looks
If done by a highly skilled hair restoration physician, alopecia reduction can make your hair line disappear overnight and give you the full head of hair that you are looking for. However, this will not stop your ongoing hair loss, just keep at bay for another 5 to ten years.
Cost
Scalp reduction surgery can be done for anywhere between 2,000 to 10,000 bucks depending on the state of your scalp and the skill of your surgeon. If some guy offers to do it for you for a few hundred bucks and takes you to a storage shed where the only instruments that you see are some box cutters and a roll of fishing line, my suggestion to you is to politely decline the offer.
