food and hair loss

Recent studies have determined that diet plays an extremely important role in having a healthy head of hair, which gives a unique relationship between food and hair loss. It has been postulated that our high fat, processed fast food diets are helping destroy our roots from the inside out.  Studies have also shown that a diet rich in in hair friendly vitamins and minerals and low in fat, will actually help prevent premature hair loss.

Fat bald men

You just have to look across the water to Japan for proof that the westernized diet of convenient, high fat foods is at  least partly responsible for increasing the rate of baldness among men. Before World War 2, when the national diet was relatively lean, baldness within Japanese culture was relatively rare. Nowadays, however, it has become a fairly common  throughout the country a.  A diet rich in red, fatty meat will increase testosterone levels in men which will increase the chances of them losing their hair. A junk food diet is also really bad for your kidneys, creating acidic blood that can also lead to hair loss.  Now, I am not saying that if you go on a strict diet and eschew all junky fast foods that are high in saturated fat, that you will never go bald, but there has been proof that eating responsibly will at least help prevent you from going bald prematurely.  It is also important to remeber that healthy hair does need protein to grow, but it is better to get this protien from sources such as soy, fish and yogurt as opposed to red meat. Soy is actually being looked at as a possible hair re-growth food!

Vitamins or lack thereof

A diet that is lacking certain hair friendly vitamins and minerals may also be a contributing cause to hairloss, especially for women.  Iron defeciency, for example is one leading cause of thinning hair. Eating your iron rich foods such as liver, spinach,  and eggs will help prevent anemia and may help you keep a healthy head of hair.  The vitamins A, E and especially B are also key in maintaining a healthy head of hair. Vitamin B6, Biotin, inositol, and folic acid are considered very important when it comes to hair growth and hair health and could  be taken as supplements.  The minerals sulfer, magnesium and zinc are also good hair building blocks. It is important to note that while vitamin A is important to hair, overdosing on it can actually lead to hairloss, so be careful with that carrot juice!

Supplement on supplements

While trying to eat healthy and right is a great way to stave off premature hairloss, lets face it, being super healthy takes a lot of time and money. We Americans live in a fast paced world which makes it hard for us to cook a healthy meal rich in vitamins and minerals and low in fat in salt. This is why we find a drive thru on practically every street corner. A good way to get all of these important Vitamins and minerals that are essential to a healthy head of hair is to take them in a supplemental pill form. Thankfully the guys over at Provillus have realized this and have included in their hairloss program,  a dietary supplement that contains everything you may possibly need to maintain a healthy head of hair.
